The company evolved from the connection between O. Temple Sloan, Dan Bock and Joe Hughes who worked at three different automotive companies, General Parts, Bobro Products and Indiana Parts Warehouse respectively.  Back in 1974 they formed the distribution network that now operates multiple distributing companies through various acquisitions and takeovers.

Today, the company has 1,350 independent stores out of 5,305 Advance Auto Parts stores.  This includes 109 Worldpac locations as well.  All in all this mean that there are over 75,000 employees working in CARQUEST Auto Parts stores, offices, warehouses and distribution centers across 49 states and other locations in North America.

CARQUEST sells and sources various automotive parts including batteries, brakes and other replacement parts for both individual and commercial customers.  There is a huge amount of knowledge across all of their dedicated employees to solve automotive issues from an oil change to rebuilding an engine.  CARQUEST can provide help with installation, professional training and vehicle accessories.

CARQUEST Careers

CARQUEST careers are split into four divisions: Retail, Commercial, Corporate and Supply Chain.  Supply Chain jobs usually include Warehouse Workers and Managers.  In Retail, the positions available are Salespeople, Delivery Drivers, Team Members, Inventory Specialists, Order Pullers and Parts Pros.  Most sales roles require candidates to have GAS2 experience and an MVR certification.  There may be additional requirements depending on the job description.

On the commercial side, typical job opportunities are for Sales Representatives, Account Managers and Sales Managers.  Corporate careers span a number of departments including Advertising, eCommerce, Operations, Finance, IT, HR, Logistics, Operations, Real Estate and more.  Many of these CARQUEST jobs require a college degree and at least 2-3 years experience.

How old do you have to be to work at CARQUEST?  You must be 18 years old to apply for jobs at CARQUEST.

Job Descriptions & Salaries

Salesperson – As a Salesperson you will have to work towards personal and store sales goals.  You will have to have a good knowledge of the products and the sourcing process.  This role requires excellent customer service skills both face-to-face and on the telephone.  You will also aid in the inventory process.  The wages are typically $9-10/hour.

Delivery Driver/Customer Service Delivery Team Member – In this role you will primarily have responsibility for preparing customers’ orders and delivering them.  There are other duties involved including delivering the weekly and monthly sales flyers, assisting with stocking and cleaning the store.  Delivery Drivers are paid hourly at a rate of $8-10.

Commercial Parts Pro/Customer Service Team Member – This role is a step up from the entry-level salesperson position and you will have a thorough knowledge of parts and vehicles.  You will be expected to be able to source and special order parts and dispatch orders for the convenience of your customers.  The average pay starts at $10/hour.

Commercial Account Manager – The responsibilities in this job are to the commercial customers.  Account Managers are there to create and maintain commercial business relationships.  This position requires good sales and communication skills and you will also need a valid drivers license.  The average salary is around $40k a year plus bonuses.

CARQUEST Interview Questions

Practicing answers to typical interview questions like these and being adequately prepared will help your chances of employment.

Why do you want to work here? Be ready for this question as it’s very likely to come up.  Pick two or three things specific to the company and the job role that convinced you to apply in the first place. 

How would you handle a difficult customer? It’s important to show that you are able to remain calm in stressful situations and that you are still able to deliver great customer service.  Any experience and examples you have from your previous work will help.

Give an example of when you had to solve a problem.  When you answer this question make sure you give some context and talk through the stages of solving the problem and describe what you learnt from the situation or what you would have done differently.

How would your last boss describe you?  You can be a bit candid when answering this question but be sure to focus on the positives.  It’s best not to come off too arrogant but try to be honest about what your last boss would name as your good points.

What is your biggest achievement?  Try to choose something that is work related or is at least something that you can link to the career you’re hoping for.  Every answer you give should demonstrate that you are the best person suited to the role.
